James (Captain) Cook

(1728 - 79), English explorer. Captain Cook charted and claimed the east coast of Australia for Britain and discovered New Caledonia. On his third voyage to the Pacific he was killed by islanders in Hawaii.

James Abbott McNeill Whistler

(1834-1903), American painter. In 1859 he moved to London. He became famous as a portrait artist, and his most well known painting is "Whistler's Mother".

James Alfred Van Allen

(1914 - 2006), American physicist. He discovered the Van Allen radiation belts outside the Earth's atmosphere and these were named after him.

James Arthur Baldwin

(1924 - 87), American novelist, dramatist, essayist and civil rights activist. His novels include 'Go Tell it on the Mountain' and 'Another Country'.

James Byron Dean

(1931 - 55), American movie actor. His portrayal of troubled, disaffected adolescence in 'East of Eden' and 'Rebel Without a Cause' made him a cult figure. He died in a car crash.

James Cagney

(1899 - 1986), American film actor. He is best remembered for his many portrayals of gangsters in movies such as 'The Public Enemy' and 'Angels with Dirty Faces'.

[Sir], (1891 - 1974) English physicist. He discovered the neutron in 1932, and in 1935 was awarded the Nobel prize for physics.

James Fenimore Cooper

(1789 - 1851), American novelist. He wrote 'The Last of the Mohicans', 'The Prairie' and 'The Pathfinder'.

James Grover Thurber

(1894 - 1961), American humorist, cartoonist and essayist. His most famous story is "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty".

James Matthew Barrie

[Sir], (1860 - 1937), Scottish dramatist and novelist. He is better known as J M Barrie. His most famous work is 'Peter Pan'.
