Margaret Hilda Thatcher

(1925 - ), English Conservative stateswoman. In 1959 she became MP for Finchley. She defeated Edward Heath in the Tory leadership campaign of 1975, to become the first woman to lead a major British political party. In 1979 she became prime minister and resigned in 1990.

Margaret Mead

(1901 - 78), American anthropologist. Her works, include "Coming of Age in Samoa", "Growing Up in New Guinea" and "The Changing Culture of an Indian Tribe".

Joseph Banks

[Sir], (1743 - 1820), English botanist and explorer. He sailed with Captain Cook on his 1768-71 voyage round the world as a representative of the Royal Society. On that trip he discovered many new species of animals and plants.
