Alan Mathison Turing

(1912-54), English mathematician. He is regarded as having been one of the most important computer theoreticians. Turing developed the concept of an idealized computer called the 'Universal Automaton' (later to be called the 'Turing Machine'). He also took part in the important code-breaking project at Bletchley Park during World War II, which deciphered the German 'Enigma' codes.

Andrew Marvell

(1621 - 78), English poet. In 1659 he became member of parliament for Hull. His poems include "The Garden" and "Upon Appleton House".
